Estet Classic Kennel was registered in 1999. The owners are I, Olga Gorbatsjova, and Natalia Kasemets. At the time of registration, the kennel’s population counted five borzois and one male greyhound. Currently, in the kennel, there are 11 greyhounds, 3 borzois and several co-owned dogs.
I became one of the first owners of a greyhound in the early 80s. Here, in Estonia, these dogs have always been uncommon. But at the time, show greyhounds were equivalent to some beautiful creatures from another planet. For over a decade, I was just admiring them, but in 1998, I decided to bring a male puppy Hepi Hepri Irbis (Pashtet) from Russia. I am very grateful to him, my first show greyhound, my dear Pashtetik. He was my great companion for long 11 years. At the beginning, he was a clever, active, and restless puppy, who then turned into a huge, waist-height, white, and in my opinion, beautiful dog. Every time, when we were going out for a walk in our neighbourhood, drivers would stop to ask what kind of breed my dog was, how much it ate, and if these dogs were dangerous… Thanks to my borzois and Pashtetik, I was a local celebrity. A group of local kids, who asked to stroke the beautiful dog, often accompanied us. While the kids were petting my Pashtetik, he was smiling… He was the one, who convinced me that I loved not only the borzois, but also the greyhounds. Thank you, my big boy!
By 1999, I have gained a long experience of living together with borzois, and a small, but satisfying experience with greyhounds. Moreover, I have accumulated many friends around the world, a great knowledge from reading literature about borzois and greyhounds, and a significant experience as a handler. This entire quantitative amount of knowledge, experience and skills was bound to make me change qualitatively, and it did happen … Gradually I began to see a picture of my ideal borzois and greyhounds. However, I had to become an official breeder in order to get what I wanted.
Therefore, in 1999 I, together with my friend and collaborator Natalia Kasemets, registered the kennel Estet Classic.
Why Estet? Because our dogs had to be beautiful. Why Classic?
Because we have decided not to adhere to any current fashion for breeding, but to focus on breeding classic borzois and greyhounds, similar to those depicted in ancient engravings, while not forgetting the standard.
Frankly, the orientation toward the ancient images of dogs was, perhaps, our naive dream. Although, after a long time has passed, we have not changed our minds. What changed was our mental picture of an ideal greyhound, or rather, it has acquired many details and became even clearer.
To begin my work with greyhounds as a breeder, I wanted to find a white bitch from the homeland breed — England. When I learned that the Gaysyde kennel, whose dogs seemed ideal to me at that time, was expecting a new litter, I began negotiating with the breeder. At the time I did not speak any English at all. I had to ask my friends to help me every time. In the end, I was able to persuade Mrs . Brenda Rowe to sell me a girl called Gaysyde Christmas Magic (Bella).
I truly believed that she was the best of the litter. I would like to thank Mrs . Brenda Rowe , who patiently answered all the mails and phone calls that she received from different English-speaking friends of mine, who acted on my behalf. Brenda told me all about Bella’s parents and relatives, sent photos and videotapes, taught me how to keep a show greyhound and more. She also assured me that the colour of a good kennel bitch is the least important thing.
Purchasing Bella was, frankly, a real gamble. At that time, I was living in an urban 3-room apartment and was working as a croupier in a casino. I must say that I earned well for our country’s wages. However, the cost of Bella plus shipping her to Tallinn via Helsinki almost equalled to my annual salary. In order to buy my Englishwoman I had to take a loan in a bank, providing my apartment as a guarantee. Nothing mattered though; the main thing was that she would have been next to me, my real, English greyhound. To say that my family did not agree with me is to say the least! But let’s not talk about that.
As the day of Bella’s arrival was approaching, I was sleeping less and less, on the last night I did not sleep at all! I will never forget the moment when an attendant in the Helsinki airport carried out a huge wooden cargo crate, and I, instead of running in its direction, stood still and whispered “thank you, thank you”. I will never forget how I pulled her out of the box, my abiding, terrified, English princess, who, by the way, did not even pee during the trip. Then, we went to a hotel on a large taxi to get some rest. I did not want to torment my tired child even more by going on a ferry to Tallinn. I tried to spoil my princess, offered her all sorts of treats. My princess, as a true Englishwoman, however, adhered strictly to the tradition, that is, eating only according to the feeding recommendations sheet, which included the schedule of feeding the puppy, given to me by Brenda. This is the story of how the breeding of greyhounds began in Estet Classic.
A few years later, after the registration of the kennel, my four-legged friend made my big city apartment too small for me and too noisy for my neighbours. Then I also realised that my job at the casino was an absolute waste of my precious time, and except for good wages, it did not contribute to my principal and favourite business. Therefore, I resigned from the casino and went to work in the veterinary clinic as a veterinary assistant. Almost at the same time, I sold my apartment and bought a cottage near the beautiful Baltic Sea beach. I built a high fence around the whole plot, equipped the paddock, installed the heating, changed the roof, and bought a bigger car, which depicted the logo “Estet Classic” and, thus, became a happy countryside resident: living near the beach among my beloved dogs. 🙂
